The house almost floats above water and the rocks with the new structures and additions being connected with the existing holiday home in a seamless fashion. Walkways and bridges turn this cabin into an even more fascinating setting as life comes to a tranquil halt at this magical Norwegian home. The two new volumes are connected with each other seamlessly with one housing the kitchen dining area and living room and the other containing the bedroom and bathrooms.
Designed by SO Architecture it is two large boxes that make up the overall design of the residence with the one on the ground providing partial support for the second box above. A steel frame also provides additional support creating an open living area that contains the kitchen and dining room.
A roughcast concrete river wall stands between the house and the river’s edge and sets clear boundaries while the silhouette of the house and the ‘raw’ nature of the elements used in construction draw from local architecture and its historic industrial past.
The lower level of the house contains the living room kitchen and dining space along with the hall and internal partitions are kept to a minimum to create the illusion of spaciousness. A neutral color scheme and uniform lighting accentuate this further and ensure that this modest Slovakian home has a breezy and cheerful ambiance.
The kitchen sits at the heart of the new interior and acts as a transition between the garden outside and the living area. White plays the role of the protagonist when it comes to the color scheme with dark shades of blue and gray ushering in visual contrast.
But what sets this fabulous modern home next to apart is its striking exterior crafted mainly from Cor-Ten steel and in-situ concrete with glass and brick also being used sporadically. Giving the exterior a bright orange and modern industrial appeal this smart residence designed by Sandy Rendel Architects draws your attention instantly.
Nothing transforms an interior completely like the right lighting. It could be a flood of natural light on some occasions and a carefully planned and executed combination of recessed and pendant lighting on others.
